Leon Gaucherel - individual; printmaker; painter/draughtsman; French; Male. 1816-1886 - Biography

Painter and etcher, born at Paris, pupil of Viollet-le-Duc; first engraved for several archeological publications, but turned to etching reproductions of old master and contemporary paintings (some works declared to the PSA). The painter and etcher Léon Gaucherel was born in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1847-1879, winning medals on numerous occasions, and being decorated with the Légion d'honneur in 1864. Gaucherel's etching are in many museum collections, including those of Saintes, Semur, and Nice, as well as the V&A in London. Besides original work, Léon Gaucherel made interpretative etchings after other artists, notably Richard Parkes Bonington and Charlotte de Rothschild.
