Gabriel Bodenehr (1673-1765)

Gibraltar

Engraver and mapmaker of Augsburg, from a family dynasty of engravers and publishers. Son of Johann Georg Bodenehr (1631-1704), father of Gabriel II and brother of Georg Conrad. In 1717 the family took over the Augsburg publishing house of Stridbeck. His works include Atlas Curieux (1704) and Curioser Staats- und Kriegs- Theatrum (1716).

In 1716 Bodenehr bought the copper plates of Johann Stridbeck, and published them in several editions.

Beatifully detailed coloured map, in excellent condition with large borders. Some minute foxing seen with a light box, makers watermark present (see photo)

Watermarks were first developed about 1282 by Italian papermakers at Fabriano. By the 15th century, most manufacturers were using watermarks to assure quality and authenticity. Now the characteristic patterns provide a method to distinguish paper manufacturers and sometimes date the paper.
