Tape Indicator Map of London - Smith & Son (W.H Smith) - 1850

£125.00

Smith's New Map of London was first published in 1830 and was issued many times under various titles. This edition can be accurately dated to between 1853 when they omitted the date from the imprint and 1861 when they reintroduced it. However, in Printed Maps of London notes the tape being added to a 1861 edition but that edition is dated and so this is probably an earlier unrecorded variant dating to the late 1850's /1860. I cannot find another on the open market.

The map is good clean condition with the only issue of note being the small tear to the section near Paddington Station, as shown. Two small fold tears have been repaired with archival tape to the back of the map.

The street listing, mentioned on the front cover is missing as these quite often became detached.

W.H Smith PLC, trading as WHSmith (also written WH Smith, and known colloquially as Smith's and formerly as W. H. Smith & Son), is a British retailer, with headquarters in Swindon, England, which operates a chain of high street, railway station, airport, port, hospital and motorway service station shops selling books, stationery, magazines, newspapers, entertainment products and confectionery.

The company was formed by Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna in 1792 as a news vendor in London. It remained under the ownership of the Smith family for many years and saw large-scale expansion during the 1970s as the company began to diversify into other markets. Following a rejected private equity takeover in 2004, the company began to focus on its core retail business. It was responsible for the creation of the ISBN book identifier.

WHSmith is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index.
