LAND OF FIRE with STRAIT OF MAGELLAN - HMS Resolution - Rigobert Bonne - 1788
1788 - M BONNE -Map LAND OF FIRE with STRAIT OF MAGELLAN Track HSM RESOLUTION COOK
Extremite Meridionale De l'Amerique | Par M. Bonne. Ingenieur-Hydrogrape de la Marine [Terre De Feu]; [Strait of Magellan with track of Cook’s second expedition in Resolution, 1774] [Engraved by André, Gaspard]
The Paris meridian is a meridian line running through the Paris Observatory in Paris, France – now longitude 2°20′14.02500″ East. It was a long-standing rival to the Greenwich meridian as the prime meridian of the world. The "Paris meridian arc" or "French meridian arc" (French: la Méridienne de France) is the name of the meridian arc measured along the Paris meridian.
Copper engraving, uncoloured as published, detailed map of southern tip of Patagonia with Fireland and the Magellan Strait, five detailed inset maps and decorated with compass rose [Longitude based on Paris Rose line as prime meridian]. Framed.
Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795 ) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773, he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne’s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. Regards the rendering of terrain, Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand colouring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal.
Map in excellent condition, pricing and grading commensurate.
