Nouvelle Carte De L'Angleterre - Henri Abraham Chatelain - 1718
Nouvelle Carte De L'Angleterre Dans Laqu'elle L'on Observe Les Comtez Les Archeves, Chez Les Eveschez, Le Univeristez. - Henri Chatelain 1718.
Wonderfully engraved antique map of England in exceptional condition. This intricate and visually stunning map of England and Wales is from Chatelain's Atlas Historique. The map features a vibrant and distinct colour scheme, commonly seen in 18th century French cartography, with the historic counties shaded in bold hues. The key cities and towns are highlighted in red, and an inset boxed map in the top right corner includes the extended parts of Northumberland. Similar to other maps by Chatelain, this map is accompanied by detailed lists and explanations, with large columns flanking its sides.
Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 - 1743) was a French pastor of Huguenot descent. He resided in various cities, including Paris, St. Martins, London (around 1710), The Hague (around 1721) and Amsterdam (around 1728). He was renowned as a Dutch cartographer and is most notably remembered for his contribution to the influential seven-volume Atlas Historique, which was published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. The Atlas Historique was a groundbreaking work for its time, featuring intricate engravings and artwork, along with in-depth studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. Some experts argue that the atlas was not solely the work of Henri Chatelain, as commonly believed, but was a collaborative effort involving his father Zacharie and brother, also named Zacharie.
